How Should You Plan Your Taiwan Itinerary 7 Days 6 Nights (Part 2)
After a good night’s rest in Taichung, you should be re-energized to continue your tour. If you missed our Day 0 and Day 1 of this itinerary, read it here. Your day will usually start around 8-10am depending on your arrangement with our guide. But if you would like to start earlier or later, simply discuss with our guide. So let’s start the 2nd day of your Taiwan Itinerary!
Day 2 (Taichung)
You will be visiting the intriguing Rainbow Village (彩繪眷村) in Taichung. This village became super popular because of an old man a.k.a. Rainbow Grandpa. In 2008, Rainbow Grandpa of Rainbow Village came up with the idea of painting the walls with various colors. Unexpectedly, more and more tourists and artists began to notice it and started to visit the place. The village has become so popular that the government was forced to preserve this village. Over the years, his artwork has spread over to the remaining houses in the village and this has attracted more than 1 million visitors annually.
What You can do at 彩繪眷村, Rainbow Village?
1 – Be amazed by the drawings here. Do you know why the Rainbow Grandpa drew all these? Was it merely because he was too bored?
2 – You should go around to take photos of the nice and creative paintings on the wall and floor.
After this, it is time for dessert!! You will visit 宮原眼科 (Miyahara). This is not an eye clinic!!! It is basically a retail shop. It is a modern attraction that is so beautifully built, many will feel that they are in Paris. Miyahara does not feature any local Taiwanese culture. It sells their house brand ice cream, chocolates, pineapple pastries, tea and snacks. It has built a good reputation because of its wonderful food. Now, it has become one of the most popular places in Taichung. Be prepared for a crowd 🙂
What You can do at 宮原眼科, Miyahara?
1 – You will enjoy a splendid choice of Ice Cream here! Any flavor is delicious.
2 – You can enjoy the unique and nice environment while eating the ice cream. You will feel that you are in Paris!
3 – Not sure what you should buy here? You can get some souvenirs for your family and friends. (土凤梨酥 is famous here!)
After enjoying your delicious ice cream, you will head to one of the most interesting places to visit in Taichung, Carton King (紙箱王). Part restaurant, part quirky souvenir store, and part art exhibit. All the decors, chairs and tables in its themed restaurant located are all made of corrugated cardboard. You may be a bit wary about sitting on a cardboard chair but it is built to be one of the sturdiest and strongest types of chairs in the world. Here you will find souvenir shops selling cardboard knick knacks and projects; a restaurant to quench your hunger; a drink shop and an extensive shops dedicated to jars of honey.
What You can do at 紙箱王, Carton King?
1 – You can blend into the amazing handicraft when taking photos. Many cartons are shaped into animals. If you have kids, they will be crazy about this place.
2 – You can eat in their themed restaurant, where tables, chairs and cutlery are all made of paper. Don’t worry. The chairs are very sturdy!
3 – You should get some beautiful art-craft as a souvenir for your family and friends.
After this, you should be hungry. So what is a MUST EAT food when you are in Taichung? 东东芋圆 (Don Don Taro) will be one of them. If you ask any Taiwanese from Taichung, they will know about it. Don Don Taro is famous because of their dessert. Their Taro balls have a unique taste and are simply delicious! At first you may doubt it, but you will be surprised once you tasted them. Due to its popularity, be prepared to queue up.
What You can do at 东东芋圆, (Don Don Taro)?
1 – Fun Fact: Their Philosophy is “呷冰冰”, “飲燒燒” (Eat Chilled, Drink Hot) You will understand this when you see their menu. Some of their hot drinks are only available during the winter.
2 – They have quite a few combinations of food. Among all, Taro Ball (芋圓) is the most popular.
Choose the rest of the combinations based on your personal choice. If you cannot decide what to eat, choose their chilled food first!
Next it’s time to have some fun and hands-on activities. How about picking mushrooms from a place that supplies 70% of the entire country’s mushrooms? 香菇街, Mushroom Street, is the best place for you to have fun and relax while doing some DIY activities. Over at Mushroom street, your knowledge about mushrooms will be taken to a whole new level. What’s more, you will be able to buy some interesting and delicious souvenirs for your family and friends too!
What You can do at 香菇街, (Mushroom Street)?
1 – You can, and should try to pick some mushrooms here. If you have kids, you should let them try too. This is a great activity for them to learn while having fun!
2 – Remember to buy some delicious mushroom products for your family and friends at home.
3 – You can eat fresh and delicious mushroom dishes here! (PS: You must try the Mushroom soup here.) This soup is very good for your health!!!
Next you will visit Europe. Oh no, you are still in Taichung. But this place will make you feel that you are in Europe. XinShe Castle (新社莊園) is one of Taichung’s famous attractions. It is often referred as Taichung’s biggest secret garden due to its extensive natural landscape. The most attractive part of the castle is its European style architecture. Once you arrive at this place, you will feel that you are in Europe. Your pace will automatically slow down. There are some Roman architecture that has become so popular that all visitors will take a photo of it.
What You can do at 新社莊園, (Xinshe Castle)?
1 – You must take a lot of photos of the nice architectures here! (This is like a glimpse of Europe)
2 – You can sit back and relax with your family here too! This is a great place to bring your kids to walk around and take some amazing photos.
3 – Photography Tip: Take a panoramic photo on the bridge
Did you ever wonder how Taichung’s sunset looks like? Do you expect Taichung to have a nice wetland? Gaomei Wetlands (高美湿地) is a lovely place with amazing scenery. You can either drive, walk or ride a bike around the area. It is about 50mins drive away from Taichung. In the recent years, it has become a famous place to watch the sunset.
If you love photography, you might want to capture the rows of windmills with the sunset as the backdrop for a wonderful memory of this place. While you are there, don’t forget to stop by Wuci Harbour, for a taste of the freshest seafood!
What You can do at 高美湿地, (Gaomei Wetlands)?
1 – Fun Fact: This is a recent hotspot for both locals and tourists. Come here around 4 – 5 pm to view its amazing sunset!!!
2 – Are you into bird viewing / photography? If yes, this is the best place for you!
3 – Travel Tip: This place is not easily accessible unless you drive in.
Bus 178 (NT20 for 30 minutes) to Qingshui 清水. But only 5 buses a day. So consider taking a taxi (NT250). Summer period is the best time to visit here. But you must avoid mid-day. It will be too hot.
Finally, you will return to Feng Chia. You visited 逢甲夜市, Feng Chia Night Market yesterday night. But we are sure that you will visit again. There are simply too many food and things to buy here. Let’s remind you of what you can find in Feng Chia Night Market. Best street food, including Feng Jia Four-in-One (the mixture of jelly fig, tapioca pearls, Kumquat and lemon juice), Crepes, Charbroiled Pepper Bread, etc.
What You can do at 逢甲夜市, Feng Chia Night Market?
1 – If you do not mind waiting, you must eat 官芝霖大腸包小腸
2 – You must never miss out Korean style chicken from 朴大哥的韓式炸雞
3 – Want to try some creative food? You must try the food in The Baker 焙客廚房

Your accommodation for the night will be near Feng Chia Night Market. So you can shop in the night market until you are really tired 🙂
